He was one of those from Peth Vadgaon who migrated to Kolhapur in the 1940s in search of employment. He spent many years working with a variety of retail stores. Later, he began making onion-garlic chutney and conducting door-to-door marketing on his own initiative. In the 1950s, when chutney was generally produced at home rather than being purchased already cooked. With his excellent marketing abilities and top-notch goods, he convinced everyone to buy his goods. Then he got married, and a year later, on March 18, 1952, he started his own business, which he named "Shrikant & Co." with the brand name "Laxmi." His eldest child is called Shrikant.
He began by promoting a single item (onion-garlic chutney). He covered the entire Kolhapur market as well as the adjacent cities and villages. His means of transportation when covering. In 1952, Mr. Annappa Maruti Gatade founded a business that produces onion-garlic chutney. A short time later, he expanded and introduced a number of other products & sub-products like chilli powder, pickles, and spices. Then, under the direction of Mr. Annappa Maruti Gatade, his elder son Mr. Shrikant Annappa Gatade and younger son Mr. Chandrakant Annappa Gatade joined the business in 1970 and 1974, respectively. They expanded the product throughout south Maharashtra, Goa, and north Karnataka. With flexo packaging, they advanced the company. With the assistance of their son, the business was able to grow its impressive turnover from 10,000 in 1952–1962 to 70 lakh–1 crore in 2009–2010.
The company was handled by his grandson Mr. Ashish Chandrakant Gatade after his sons' deaths in vehicle accidents in 1998 and 2009, respectively. The secret to this success is to offer "uncompromising quality at a competitive price." Since 1952, the company has expanded into several markets and product lines. The popularity of the "Laxmi" brand has spread.
